The Cascade Geographic Society has a number of projects in
need of volunteers of all ages and abilities. Below is just a partial list of
opportunities. You may have talents that could assist us in other capacities and
projects not listed, so be sure to get in touch with us. If you would like to

Mount Hood Historical Loom Project
Volunteers are needed to set up a large historical loom that was constructed on
Mount Hood by Grandpa Bailey who operated "Bailey's Mount Hood Cabin
Resort" at the Village of Wildwood. It was, later, handed down in the
family and was utilized by Lutie Welch Bailey. This historical treasure is
currently in pieces and it is the desire of the Cascade Geographic Society to
get it back together and begin utilizing it once again.
Mount Hood Loop Highway Historical Research
Volunteers are needed to assist with historical research related to the
historical "Mount Hood Loop Highway" that opened in 1924.
Building Exhibit Cases
Volunteers are needed for the construction of a variety of display
cases to be utilized at Cascade Geographic Society interpretive facilities,
which includes "Stage Stop Road Interpretative Center", the
"Oregon Country Settlement", and "Portland's Museum of
Shanghaiing & Maritime Lore".
East U.S. Highway 26 Zig
Zag-Rhododendron Project
Volunteers are needed to write letters and do research
concerning the preservation of heritage resources (natural, cultural, and
historical) related to this highway widening project.
Whiskey Jack Creek Wetlands Restoration Work
Volunteers are needed to help remove blackberries that are choking-off native
vegetation in this natural area owned by the Cascade Geographic Society.
Oregon Country Settlement Work
Volunteers are needed for a variety of carpentry work at this living history
site, in addition to the sewing of curtains. A variety of tasks available.
Fish & Wildlife Habitat Restoration Work
Volunteers are needed to help remove scotchbroom, blackberries, and other
non-native vegetation in natural areas. This work is on-going and ideal for both
large and small groups, and for individuals and families. The work sites are
located on Mount Hood but we can arrange for a site closer to Portland near
Sauvie Island.
AT&T's Proposed 125-Foot Cell Tower
Volunteers are needed to write letters, pass out
petitions, conduct research on the internet, etc. This cell tower will have a
major adverse impact on the Village of Rhododendron and Cascade Geographic
Society's "Sanctuary Lands".
Rhododendron Meadow Covered
Bridge
Volunteers are needed to do site plans, architectural renderings, sketches, grant writing,
fund-raising, historical research, and a whole lot more.
Underground Portland
Restoration Work
Volunteers are needed to do help move debris and expose part of Portland's
hidden infamous shanghaiing history. One work area, when complete, will allow
artifacts related to the shanghaiing trade to be displayed.
Rhododendron Meadow Restoration Work
Volunteers are needed to help with stream habitat work and removing non-native
vegetation that are choking-off native vegetation in this 14.5-acre parcel that
is owned by the Cascade Geographic Society.
Mount Hood Oregon Trail
Quilt Show & Old-Time Fiddlers Jamboree
Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions at this free
family-oriented event. This includes working the Cascade Geographic Society
booth, putting out and taking down signs, setting up the quilt exhibit, running
errands, and helping out with the "Oregon Trail Vintage & Classic
Cruise-In & Motorcar Tour", etc. Dates for the 2001 festival are as
follows: July 21st (Saturday), 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and July 22nd (Sunday), 9 a.m.
to 6 p.m. People are needed for a variety of hours. This event is held at Mt.
Hood Village, 65000 East U.S. Highway 26, near Brightwood, Oregon.
Mount Hood Huckleberry Festival
Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions at this free family-oriented
festival. This includes assisting with the music stage, setting up sound
equipment, working the Cascade Geographic Society booth, bagging Huckleberries,
putting out and taking down signs, running errands, and assisting with special
events, such as the "World's Record-Breaking Watermelon Launch", the
"Huckleberry Jam" (music show), the "Evening Concert", the
"Barlow Trail Horse & Wagon Show", the "Mount Hood
Huckleberry Festival Vintage & Classic Cruise-In & Motorcar Tour",
historical tours, and more. Dates for the 2001 festival are as follows: August
24th (Friday), 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; August 25th (Saturday), 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and
August 26 (Sunday), 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. People are needed for a variety of hours.
This Festival is held at Mt. Hood Village, 65000 East U.S. Highway 26, near
Brightwood, Oregon.
Mount Hood Salmon & Mushroom
Festival
Volunteers are needed to help at this free family-oriented festival. This
includes assisting with the music stage, setting up sound equipment, working the
Cascade Geographic Society booth, putting out and taking down signs, running
errands, and assisting with special events, such as the "Oregon State Chili
and Grilling Championship", conducting salmon habitat tours, the
"Mount Hood Loop Vintage & Classic Cruise-In & Motorcar Tour",
and more. Dates for the 2001 festival are as follows: October 6th (Saturday),
Noon to 6 p.m.; and October 7 (Sunday), Noon to 6 p.m. People are needed for a
variety of hours. This Festival is held at Mt. Hood Village, 65000 East U.S.
Highway 26, near Brightwood, Oregon.
Mount Hood Public Lands
Clean-Up
Volunteers are needed to assist in cleaning up illegal trash dumps on Mount
Hood. Areas cleaned are riparian areas that are critical to Salmon and other
anadromous fish, wildlife habitats, Oregon Trail segments, and Native American
cultural sites. Pickup trucks are also needed to haul trash from the dumpsites
to the disposal dumpsters. The main clean-up day for 2001 is November 3rd
(Saturday), but the work actually begins a week before this. Meet at Mt. Hood
Village, 65000 East U.S. Highway 26, near Brightwood, Oregon, in the Lodge
Center.
Christmas Along the
Barlow Trail
Volunteers are needed to assist in this event. Set-up, tear-down, signage, and
more. The "Oregon Trail Heritage Day" is on December 8th (Saturday),
from 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.; and the "Oregon Trail Heritage Tour" on
December 9th (Sunday), from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet at Mt. Hood Village, 65000
East U.S. Highway 26, near Brightwood, Oregon, in the Lodge Center.
