To people interested in the Underground Tour of Portland:
On Wednesday, October 17, 2001, we were informed by Old Town Pizza Co. that
we could no longer conduct our tours by accessing the underground through
their restaurant. The owners cited two concerns:
security of their basement, and their feeling that they weren't benefiting
from the tours.
We respect their concerns; however, we disagree on both counts. We have
provided durable locks for, and either do not enter, or do not linger in,
areas where they house products or where employees keep belongings. At no
time have our handful of dedicated volunteers, or the public who have taken
the tours, taken anything from the underground. In regard to the restaurant,
our tours have exposed hundreds of people to their excellent food, and in
addition to many people eating before or after the tours, many have brought
their families or business people back multiple times.
We have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours preparing the underground for
these educational and informative tours [we've always called them a "work
progress"], and hundreds of dollars in lighting, rebuilding missing walls,
and so on, and have worked with the owners for a number of years, never
undertaking any project without their blessing. Although we don't
understand their sudden reversal, we can do nothing about it.
We have invested too much to let this project go; we're working on other
venues for accessing the underground, but it will take a little time. If
you'd like to be on our call-back list for the future, please let us know.
If you'd like to let the owners know of your disappointment at this
sudden cancellation of tour opportunities, please write to them at:
